Year 2

Welcome to Year 2!

Dear Parents/Carers,

I hope you had a great Christmas holiday.

Staffing

I will be teaching the class each day with Mrs Fullick and Mrs Webber covering PPA time on Friday afternoons.  From February, Mrs Webber will be replaced by Mrs Mathers as Mrs Webber will be covering maternity leave in pre-school.

Mrs Fullick will continue as our main Teaching Assistant and will be joined by Mrs Berry 3 days per week.

Interventions will be carried out in the afternoons by Mrs Scampton, Mrs Harte and Mrs Muchmore.

Curriculum Overview

A copy of our curriculum for this term is attached with this letter and can also be found on the class 2 page of the school website.  Before half term we will be learning about  ‘The Arctic Circle’ and after half term, ‘The Battle of Hastings and Norman Conquest’.

Physical Education

For the first half term we will be swimming each Thursday.  After half term, year 2 will be learning Dance each Thursday and Rugby each Friday.

Home Learning

Home learning will change this term. A variety of activities will be sent home each week based focusing on reading, writing and maths. This will support and embed the learning objectives we have covered and help your child to continue to make good progress. Home learning needs to be returned every Wednesday and new home learning will be sent home on Thursdays. Home learning will only be marked on Wednesdays so if it is late, it will not be marked until the following Wednesday.

Spellings

This terms spellings will be displayed in your child’s spelling book weekly. Children will have ten spellings to learn each week. Each Thursday the children will be tested on these ten spellings and five random spellings from previous weeks. This is to encourage the children to continue to revise previous spellings. Please encourage your child to practice the spellings every week using the spelling ideas in their spelling book. Spelling books are in school every day so that we can write the ten spellings in it and also write the children’s spelling test scores.

Reading

Parents often ask teachers what can they do to help support their child’s learning and progress. Without doubt, the biggest answer to this is … READING! This could be listening to your child read; reading a fabulous book to your child or having regular bedtime reading sessions. Listening to stories is proven to have a massive impact on children’s vocabulary development which then has a positive impact on their writing.

Your child should be reading to an adult or older sibling every day for 5 – 10 minutes. It is important that they have the opportunity to talk about the book that they are reading.

To promote reading at home, Year 2 will be having a reading competition this half term. We will check each child's reading record every Friday and if they have read to an adult at home five times or more in a week, they will be given a special reading raffle ticket. This ticket will then be put in the reading jar and if it is one of the three tickets picked out in the draw held before half term, the child will receive a special reading prize.

We are keen to hear from anybody who has some spare time to hear children read during the afternoon. This can be for as little as 10 minutes at the end of the school day. Any time you have to offer is always greatly appreciated.

If you have any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to make an appointment to come and see me. Additionally, messages can be left on the class DoJo and I can be emailed at agibb@stjohnstiverton.co.uk

Thank you for your support.

Yours sincerely,

Miss Gibb

Dear Parents/Carers,

I hope you had a great summer holiday. I had a great summer and can’t wait to start my journey with you all at St. Johns.

Staffing

I will be teaching the class every day and Mrs Fullick will be with us every morning. Mrs Scampton will be with us on a Tuesday afternoon and Mrs Harte will be with us on Wednesday and Thursday afternoons. Mrs Webber will be taking the class on a Friday afternoon with Mrs Fullick.

Curriculum Overview

This half term our learning will focus around the theme ‘Marvellous Me.’ You can find a curriculum overview which shows you what we will be covering in our learning on our Year 2 page.

Physical Education

PE will take place on Wednesdays and Fridays. Please make sure that your child has a named kit in school at all times.

Home Learning

In Key Stage 1 we will be continuing with the home learning challenge. There are lots of different home learning activities for the children to choose from in their home learning book. They can choose whatever activity they like each week. When they have created an activity, they can cross out the box and colour in the correct number of stars.

The children:

MUST complete the grey boxes

SHOULD aim to earn 20 stars by the end of half term

COULD earn more than 20 stars by the end of half term

If any of the children manage to earn more than 20 stars by Friday 19th October, they will receive a special home learning certificate. Please remind the children that home learning books/completed activities should be handed in every Wednesday.

Spellings

This half term’s spellings will be displayed at the back of the children’s home learning books. The children will have ten spellings to learn each week. They will be tested on these ten spellings and five random spellings from previous weeks. This is to encourage the children to continue to revise previous spellings. Please encourage your child to practice the spellings every week using the spelling ideas in their spelling book. The spelling test will be on a Thursday. Please make sure that the spelling books are in school every day so that we can write the ten spellings in it and also write the children’s spelling test scores.

Reading

It would be greatly appreciated if you could listen to your child read regularly and record this in their reading record. The children should be reading to someone every day for 5 – 10 minutes. It is important that they have the opportunity to talk about the book that they are reading.
