Year 5

Dear Parents

Welcome back from what I hope was a restful holiday and you were all able to enjoy the sun we had.

This term is going to be busy with our residential in May, assessment week, sports week and the end of the academic year.

PE will be on Monday and Wednesday. Mrs Fullick will teach PE on Mondays whilst each Wednesday the class will receive some cricket coaching from a specialist!

A reminder that home learning is set on Friday and is expected to be handed in the following Wednesday. It is the children’s responsibility to hand their home learning in on time. This is particularly important as they are heading towards year 6 where home learning plays a very important part in the children’s learning and helps to prepare them for High School.

As usual, if you have any questions or want to talk about your child, feel free to catch me in the morning to arrange an appointment, at the end of the day or send a message on Class Dojo.

If you have not yet signed up to Class Dojo and are able to, I urge you to do so as this will be a great means of contact whilst on residential. I am hoping to start using the photo-sharing element of the app so this will be an excellent way to show you what we have been up to!

I look forward to working with you and your children for the last term of Year 5. They have been an absolute pleasure so far and have all made fantastic progress.

Kind regards,

Miss Gall

Welcome to Year 5!

Dear Parents / Carers,

Welcome back from what I hope was a fantastic festive break and a chance for the children to relax and get some sleep!

We start our term off with the exciting topic of Extreme Earth and Space! We will be studying the geographical aspects of Earth and then in Science will be looking closer at the Solar System and the different changes we experience back on Earth.

This term there will be a big focus on the presentation of our learning across all subjects. I can see a huge improvement in all of the children’s handwriting but this now needs to be consistent!

I also urge you to help your child learn their timestables as this will have a huge impact in their maths!

For the first half of the Spring term we will be swimming on Thursday afternoons. Please ensure children have the correct kit in school with them.

Please encourage your child to complete their home learning and to take pride in the presentation of their work.

Home learning will be different this term. Children will be given a ‘menu’ of tasks, allowing them to choose which ones they want to complete. This will  provide children with some independence and aims to encourage children to engage with an aspect of home learning that interests them!

Maths and spelling will be continued to be given out on a weekly basis and it is expected that children will hand in their homework by the following Wednesday.

The websites below can be used at home to support your child’s learning:

This term Year 5 continue to have the support from Mrs Scampton, Mrs Hart, Mrs Revolta and Mrs Sumner. Mrs Fullick will be teaching the class on Monday afternoons and Mrs Webber will be teaching the class on Friday afternoons.

If you have any questions or concerns, or if you would like to volunteer to help out in any way (especially with listening to readers), you can contact me at the school. The best time to reach me is after 3:30pm or to leave a message at the office and I shall get in touch. Alternatively, I can be emailed at

Yours sincerely,

Miss Gall

The following are ways in which you can help your child to engage and embrace their time in year 5 at St John's:

  • Bring in items of interest related to the work in class.
  • Encourage your child to read every day and discuss what they have read.
  • Practise multiplication tables and related division facts daily.
  • Help them practise their spellings and spelling strategies every day.
  • Encourage them to do their homework in a planned way.
  • Organise their own things ready for school and take care of their belongings.
